Heath Ceramics

Visiting Heath Ceramics in Sausalito, California, is a pilgrimage any design buff should make. Edith Heath became famous in the late ‘40s for her simple ceramic designs that celebrated raw materials, the process, and the environment before that sort of thing was even cool. After purchasing the historic ceramics factory in 2003, Cathy Bailey and Robin Petravic set about developing their own creative utopia, putting craft, hard work, responsibility, sustainability, and innovation into practice as they built on what Edith Heath had started.

Andy and his family were finishing up a public tour of the Sausalito plant when he had to make a quick pit stop before getting back on the road. Even the tiles in the men’s room were cool, so he snapped a picture and posted it on our blog. The next day, Andy got an email from Cathy: “Hey, I wish I’d known you were here. I would have come down to meet you. I’ve been following you guys for a long time.” She and Andy struck up a regular dialog, which eventually led to the question “How do we work together?”
